“And I Am the Unceasing Journey Back to the Homeland”
In 1977, Professor George Bisharat came to Palestine on his American passport, carrying a photograph of his grandfather’s home in the Talbiya neighborhood. He searched the area, where the street names had changed and been Hebraized, walking among the houses and recalling his father’s and grandfather’s descriptions of the neighborhood. What has become of the Villa Haroun al-Rashid today?
Built in 1926, the villa was one of the most beautiful buildings in western Jerusalem. It belonged to the Bisharat family, whose origins trace back to the village of Rafidia in Nablus. Hanna Bisharat, who was born in the Jordanian city of Salt, chose to associate the villa’s name with the Abbasid caliph Harun al-Rashid, reflecting its grandeur and distinctive architectural style.
After hours of searching, Professor George finally found the house, with its three floors, blue ceramic tiles adorning its façade, its corners and garden, and its lemon and ornamental trees. He revisited the memories of the place, comparing them with what he saw before his eyes. He could almost hear his father and uncles playing in the garden and taking family photographs, unaware of what would become of their home in the years to come.
He knocked on the door, and an elderly Israeli woman answered. He introduced himself and explained that his family had owned the house before the Haganah took it over in 1948, after receiving its keys from the British, who had rented the building from his family. She replied, “Your family never lived here.”
He laughed to himself and did not argue, despite holding a photograph of his family in his hand. Following this exchange, her husband, Zvi Berenson, arrived. He had served as a judge on the Israeli Supreme Court and allowed George to enter only the house’s living room.
Golda Meir, the former Israeli prime minister, had also lived on the second floor of the Bisharat family home while serving as foreign minister. In an interview with journalist Frank Giles, published in The Sunday Times on June 15, 1969, she had declared: “There was no such thing as a Palestinian people. It was not as though we came and threw them out of their country. They did not exist.”
Now, 45 years after that first visit to the house, Andrew Bisharat, a fourth-generation descendant of the family, has come to Palestine, holding firmly to his family’s memories and their right to their home. With a determination no less strong than that of those who came before him, he carries the same photograph, because “the young do not forget.”
We walked through the Talbiya neighborhood before making our way to the house. Andrew stood before the gate and remained silent for more than five minutes, without moving, as though a reel of his family’s memories were playing beneath the arches of the third-floor balcony.
He walked through the garden, climbed the external steps, touched the walls, examined the windows, and took photographs with his phone.
As we stood at the entrance, the door suddenly opened, and two men came out, one of them dressed in work clothes. The other asked, “Who are you, and is there anything I can help you with?”
Andrew stepped forward, introduced himself, and told the man that his family had once lived in the building.
The man explained that he was an engineer whose company was designing and renovating the house’s interior. He added that if Andrew wished to enter and look around, he could contact the owners of the house and request their permission.
Andrew declined. He picked two lemons from the garden, intending to give one to his father and keep the other for himself, and began to leave.
The Israeli man then returned to stop us and asked Andrew, with surprise, “Did they live here, in Golda’s house?”
Andrew laughed to himself and did not argue, despite holding a photograph of his family in his hand, and left.
