He searched the area, where the street names had changed and been Hebraized, walking among the houses and recalling his father’s and grandfather’s descriptions of the neighborhood. What has become of the Villa Haroun al-Rashid today?

Built in 1926, the villa was one of the most beautiful buildings in western Jerusalem. It belonged to the Bisharat family, whose origins trace back to the village of Rafidia in Nablus. Hanna Bisharat, who was born in the Jordanian city of Salt, chose to associate the villa’s name with the Abbasid caliph Harun al-Rashid, reflecting its grandeur and distinctive architectural style.

After hours of searching, Professor George finally found the house, with its three floors, blue ceramic tiles adorning its façade, its corners and garden, and its lemon and ornamental trees. He revisited the memories of the place, comparing them with what he saw before his eyes. He could almost hear his father and uncles playing in the garden and taking family photographs, unaware of what would become of their home in the years to come.

He knocked on the door, and an elderly Israeli woman answered.
